How did Jesus deal with grief?

Grief is a universal human experience, a profound emotion that touches everyone at some point in their lives. Even Jesus Christ, during His time on earth, was not immune to the pangs of sorrow and grief. The Bible provides clear instances of how Jesus dealt with grief, offering us valuable lessons on handling our own moments of sorrow.

  • Understanding Human Sorrow: Jesus showed deep empathy and compassion in the face of human suffering.
  • John 11:33-35: “When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, and said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They told him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept.”
  • Allow yourself to feel and express sorrow, understanding that grief is a natural human response.

  • Seeking Solace in Prayer: Jesus often turned to prayer during times of distress and grief.
  • Matthew 26:36-39: “Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to his disciples, ‘Sit here, while I go there and pray.’ … He fell on his face, and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.’”
  • In moments of grief, seek comfort and strength in prayer, expressing your deepest fears and desires to God.

Accepting Support from Others

  • Receiving Comfort from Friends: Jesus accepted the presence and support of His friends during difficult times.
  • Luke 22:39-45: “He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed, saying, ‘Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.’ An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.”
  • Don’t hesitate to lean on friends and loved ones for support during periods of grief.

Confronting Grief with Hope

  • Hope in the Midst of Sorrow: Jesus confronted grief with the hope of God’s promises and the resurrection.
  • John 11:25-26: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’”
  • Anchor your grief in the hope of eternal life and the promises of God, which provide comfort and strength.

Demonstrating Resilience

  • Resilience in Suffering: Jesus exemplified resilience, enduring grief and suffering with a focus on His mission.
  • Hebrews 12:2-3: “Looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls.”
  • Find strength in your purpose and faith, allowing them to guide you through times of grief.
