What Does the Bible say about horoscopes and astrology?

Horoscopes and astrology have been a part of human culture for thousands of years, offering insights into personality, destiny, and events based on the positions of celestial bodies. But what does the Bible say about these practices? While the scriptures don’t mention horoscopes and astrology by their modern names, they do provide guidance on seeking knowledge and understanding from sources outside of God.

Seeking Guidance from God Alone: Isaiah 47:13

“You are wearied with your many counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from the things that will come on you.”

  • The prophet Isaiah challenges the Babylonians for relying on astrologers and stargazers for guidance instead of seeking the one true God.
  • The verse suggests the futility of relying on such practices over divine counsel.

The Danger of Idolatry: Deuteronomy 4:19

“And lest you lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them.”

  • While the verse doesn’t directly address astrology, it warns against the worship of celestial bodies.
  • The Bible emphasizes the importance of worshiping God alone and not being led astray by other entities or practices.

God as the Creator of Celestial Bodies: Psalm 147:4

“He counts the number of the stars. He calls them all by their names.”

  • The Bible acknowledges the wonder of the stars and celestial bodies but attributes their creation to God.
  • They are part of His magnificent creation, but they aren’t sources of wisdom or guidance in and of themselves.

The Magi and the Star of Bethlehem: Matthew 2:1-2

“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.'”

  • The Magi, often considered astrologers, followed a star to find Jesus.
  • However, it’s essential to note that the star served as a sign pointing to Jesus, the Messiah.
  • The focus was on the Savior, not the celestial sign.

The Call to Avoid Divination: Deuteronomy 18:10

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer.”

  • The Bible warns against various forms of divination, which can include seeking to predict the future or discern personal guidance from stars or other sources apart from God.

While the Bible recognizes the beauty and wonder of celestial bodies as part of God’s creation, it cautions against seeking them for guidance or wisdom. The scriptures emphasize the importance of seeking knowledge, understanding, and direction from God alone. As believers deal with the complexities of life, the Bible serves as a compass, pointing to God as the ultimate source of truth and guidance.
